Long time no see! My apologies for the lack of updates.
So, this post will serve as a combined update.
On August 20th, I participated in a Hazekura Club event at the Edogawa Drainage Channel.
This was an even bigger success than last year's event, with lure makers like Rob Lure and Mukai, the originators of Hazekura, Lucky Craft, Smith fishing tackle, and even GoPro participating, making it a very large-scale event.
A mini-tournament was also held where we competed for the total length of three gobies, and I joined in.
I thought just participating would be a bit boring, so since the Edogawa Drainage Channel is famous for boat goby fishing, I decided to give it a try!
I was able to rent a rowboat from Ito Yusen and tried Hazekura (goby crankbaiting) from the boat.

Yep, this is where the actress Satomi Ishihara was goby fishing in the Tokyo Metro commercial.
Boat Hazekura is quite challenging, but you can expect better results than fishing from the shore. Unlike bait fishing where you keep targeting the same spot, it's more about targeting the depth where the fish are, moving according to the current and tide level. In fact, the third-place winner of the tournament was fishing from a boat and apparently caught over 40 fish. That's incredible, considering the tough conditions with so many people making the fish cautious. The catch, however, is that the tournament is judged on the total length of three fish, not the number caught. As for me, I'm afraid I was too busy rowing and only managed to take this one photo. Still, I caught over 10 gobies, including some good sizes for this season in the 10-13cm range. I honestly think fishing from a boat is a solid choice.

A catch on a Cra-Pea lure.
For beginners at the Edogawa Drainage Channel, I highly recommend trying to fish from a boat. Places where you can fish for gobies from a boat like this are rare in Japan, and in the Kanto region, the Edogawa Drainage Channel is probably the only one. Shore fishing here usually involves wading, but from a boat, you don't have to, so you can stay dry. It's very convenient. You can even have your rowboat towed by a motorboat to get to spots further out, and they'll come pick you up for the return trip, so you don't have to row constantly.
So there you have it, my proposal for a new fishing style: Boat Hazekura.
And here are my catches from the two weeks since the event. By the way, I built a new rod again (for bait finesse). It's working out really well, so I plan to write about it in a separate post.

When you let the ALTO lure float up, they get hooked on the front hook. The ALTO is exceptionally good for that slow retrieve with a gentle floating action.

A 14cm "hine-san" (a large, mature goby) caught using the ALTO's gentle floating method.

This is a 14cm goby I caught with a spoon in strong winds as a typhoon was approaching.
It really feels like 14cm is a barrier I can't break.
Until next time.
