I went goby fishing again today, and it was so cold!
Yesterday, I tried a different spot from my usual canal, hoping to catch a big one, but had no luck.
The bait anglers seemed to be struggling as well, so I was undecided on where to go today. But, I really wanted to see a goby, so I headed straight for my usual canal.
I started fishing at 3 PM, and the water was crystal clear. Even in the deeper spots, about 2 meters deep, I could see all the way to the bottom through my polarized sunglasses.
When it's like this, the fish can see you clearly, making them wary and harder to catch. The bait anglers weren't catching anything in the open water either, so they were targeting gobies hiding in the rocks (I heard they couldn't even catch them in the deep spots with long rods).
In these conditions, crankbaits are at a significant disadvantage. I got a few bites from the rock crevices, but it's a one-shot deal, so if you don't get a hookset, it's over. It's so difficult to catch them!

So, the first fish I caught was a Chichibu goby. Catching one of these first is a strong sign that the water is cold and the gobies are sluggish. Chichibu will aggressively chase lures in colder water than other gobies.

I finally managed to pull out a goby. It's a small one, but it was a great fighter.
Today, the lures with rattles weren't getting a good response; in fact, it seemed like the sound was scaring the gobies away.
So, I switched to a rattle-less Toremo lure and managed to catch one. Normally, when they are avoiding rattles, spoons are extremely effective, but I stuck with crankbaits because I was aiming for a "Haze King" (a giant goby).
In a situation like this, I should have brought my silent-tuned Cra-Pea.
This just goes to show that while rattles can be effective for gobies, they aren't a silver bullet.
Until next time.
