It's been a while since my last update.
First off, Happy New Year.
Well, it's been quite some time since the last post, but let's start with a report on goby cranking (hazekura). My usual canal was a complete bust last year, even into November, which was pretty discouraging. The season ended with the gobies being small and few and far between. I wonder if we can expect better things this year?
So, what have I been doing since then? Well, if the goby fishing is bad, there's always managed fishing ponds! I've been completely immersed in area trout fishing, mainly at the "Toshimaen" pool trout venue.
I also visited Susono Fishing Park and Fish On Ozenji for the first time.
I fell in love with Susono right away. The fish fight incredibly hard; even the small ones pull three times harder than the pool trout. I had my drag set wrong and got my line snapped over and over.
I felt bad for the fish, but the fight is just outstanding. They also stock the pond four times a day (twice in the morning and twice in the afternoon), so it was a great experience.

Even at this size, they make the drag scream. If you let your guard down, the line will snap.

And as for the pool fishing,

An albino after a long time. It looks completely resigned to being caught.
I'm getting to the point where I can catch a decent amount, no matter the conditions.
But it's tough when I can only go on weekends. I need more practice.
Yesterday, I was at Ozenji. I first went there in November and had some pretty good fishing, so I've been keen to go back.
I'd heard you can have a lot of success with topwater lures there, so even though rain was in the forecast for the afternoon, I decided to go before it started.
I started fishing, but the bite was really slow. I could catch fish here and there with spoons, but I couldn't get any consistent action. I kept changing lures and tactics to land fish, but couldn't find a stable pattern. A visit from a cormorant partway through didn't help my catch count either.
Then, for an hour starting at 12:00 PM, the fish suddenly started rising. Thinking, "This is topwater time!" I cast a pencil bait and...

I got a lot of strikes in a short period and had a pretty good haul. Catching them on topwater is always a blast.
I never expected to catch fish on topwater when the temperature was only 8 degrees Celsius. This is so much fun, especially using a baitcasting setup for topwater, which has a lot in common with bass fishing. As someone who comes from a bass fishing background, topwater action really gets me fired up.
You can use the same tackle for both hazekura (goby cranking) and trout, so I highly recommend everyone try both types of fishing. It'll broaden your angling horizons and it's a ton of fun!
So, that's what I've been up to.
Lastly, I look forward to another great year with all of you.
